The actor, dressed in white cotton underwear (shitagi) and a white silk top (dōbu) with padded shoulders, is ready to be costumed. First, several collars of specified colors are crossed over at the neck and extra stuffing pillows placed where needed, such as at the chest.
Next, a colorful underrobe is donned. Here an atsuita is being placed on the shoulders.
After wrapping it around the body, with the left lapel crossing over the right, it is secured at the waist with a cord.
Since the lower part of the underrobe will be hidden under the divided skirts and the actor will need freedom of leg movement for vigorous fighting scenes, the hem of the robe is hiked up.
