Ichikawa Hamazo was born in Edo as a son of Hamase Kin'emon, an owner of a teahouse on Sakai Street. He initially became a student of Segawa Kikunojo II and took the name Segawa Yoshimatsu. He first appeared on stage in 1764 as a child role at the Nakamura Theater in Edo. In 1770 he changed his name to Segawa Kitsuji III. In 1785 he became a student of Ichikawa Danjuro V and changed his name to Ichikawa Hamazo. Hw later used a different character for Hama and moved to Osaka. In 1822, after performing in Miyajima, he went back to Osaka and passed away. However, it was also said that he last performed in 1802 (May), according to Kabuki Nempyo. He was active from 1764 to 1802 or 1822.
