Name
Vaudeville
Notes
Vaudeville, also known as variety theater, was a prevalent form of light popular entertainment in England, France, and the US during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Comprised of short acts of all kinds, it could include almost any type of performance, feat, trick, stunt, or skill, but was mainly comprised of comedy, acrobatics and juggling, music, trained animals, magic, and dance. It is closely related to minstrelsy, burlesque, and the circus arts. Its name probably derives from a corruption of a French word or phrase, possibly "vaux-de-vire" (a type of satirical song) or "Val-de-Vire" (the home region of this song), as Vaudeville got its start in 18th Century Paris. A British variant of Vaudeville, known as Music Hall, was known for its inclusion of distinctive musical sing-a-long numbers. Motion pictures and then television replaced Vaudeville beginning in the 1920s, and many early movie and television actors were former vaudevillians. As of 2005, Vaudeville is still performed in a limited and sporadic way in some cities.
