Notes
Burlesque began as a form of popular theater in 1840s London, specializing in satire or parody of current events and popular culture, with ribald overtones and revealing costumes. First introduced to the US by the touring group Lydia Thompson's British Blondes in 1868. It later gave way to more sexually suggestive material, focusing on strip-tease dance routines (introduced in the 1890s) and low-brow comedy by the mid-20th century. Although burlesque was mostly replaced by more explicit forms of pornography and "exotic dancing" in the latter half of the 20th century, it has had a nostalgic resurgence around the turn of the 21st century.
