He first appeared on stage as Bandō Tsurunosuke IV at Osaka Naka Theatre in August, 1943 and he took the name Ichimura Takenojō VI at the Kabuki Theatre in April, 1964. Then he took the name Nakamura Tomijūrō IV at the Kabuki Theatre in September, 1972. He was designated a Living National Treasure in 1994.
