This is an unusual, early depiction of a trapeze artist in fancy costume. The upper half of the costume falls in line with the fashion of the time- Note that while the performer's waist appears to be corseted, the neckline is an 1870's style, and the fabric looks heavy and is ornately embellished, the bottom portion of the costume is clearly designed for ease of movement of the legs. It strangely resembles a diaper with a slit up each side, or perhaps bloomers, which did not come until fashion until about 25 years after this photo was taken. |
