| Intrigue | Tragic farce about a poet fanatically in love and jealousy. Acknowledged a masterpiece in Europe, this farce takes jealousy to a level not attained by any other modern writer. A hot-blooded poet in Breugelesque Flanders becomes jealous of his young wife and orders her to fornicate with every man in the village so that his suspicions can be confirmed. The men riotously go into serial rut, their wives go on a rampage, the wife blossoms under all the attention -- and the poet becomes bilious, bald, and insane. |
| Notes | "Magnanimous Cuckold" is the title of Aksionov's Russian translation, staged by Meyerhold. |
