Name
Christensen, Willam
Notes
From a family of dancers, the Christensen brothers (Lew, Harold, and Willam) began performing professionally in vaudeville in the late 1920s and early 30s, then moved quickly into ballet. They worked with a variety of dance greats, including Lincoln Kirstein and George Balanchine, in a number of companies. They also worked as choreographers and teachers; Lew alone choreographed over 70 pieces. The brothers founded the San Francisco Ballet, and Willam directed it from 1938-1951, as did Lew from 1951-1984. Willam founded the Utah Ballet (later Ballet West) in 1952. SFPALM

Nutcracker, The
Plot Summary
A young girl receives a toy nutcracker during a Christmas party. During her dreams that night, the Nutcracker and her other toys come alive to wage battle with mice. Clara and her Nutcracker are victorious, and the rest of the story is filled with a fantasy about winter beauty and sugary sweets.
Notes
Based on the story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" by E.T.A. Hoffman. First performed in St. Petersburgh at the Maryinsky Theatre in 1892, the Nutcracker was introduced to the US during the San Francisco Ballet's first American full-length production of the ballet in 1944. Since then, it has become a Christmas tradition in the US. SFPALM

Place notes
The San Francisco War Memorial Opera House is home to both the San Francisco Ballet, and the San Francisco Opera. It is the mirror image of the San Francisco War Memorial Veteran's Building; these two buildings face each other across a decorative courtyard, and were built in a joint project paid for by the city and the US Veteran's Association, as a memorial to San Franciscan soldiers killed in World War I. They are both part of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center, in the City's Civic Center area.SFPALM
