The image of Monty (the lion) appears to have been cut out, then placed over the image of Carter, and the whole thing reproduced to look as if they were posing together.

Carter the Great was well-known for his expensive and elaborate Oriental-themed costumes, many of which he collected from exotic locations during his round-the-world tours in the early 20th century.
