Ichikawa Datezo I was a student of Hanakawa Sakuya and took the name Hanakawa Daikichi and trained in Kyoto. He changed his name to Hanakawa Ichinojo and first appeared on stage in a young female role (iroko) in Kyoto in 1745. In 1759 he went to Edo and then he changed his name to Ichikawa Datezo as a student of Ichikawa Danjuro IV. He palyed male roles and evil enemies and later played old female roles (kashagata). In 1771 he retired. He was well suited for jidaimono. He was active from 1735 to 1771.
