| 附注 | Character types: jitsugoto; chivalrous commoners (otokodate). Group affiliations:Maruya.Otani Hiroji III was initially Yoneyama Tokugoro. He became a student of Otani Hiroji II, took the name Otani Haruji, and worked at Ichimura Theater in Edo. In 1758 he changed his name to Itani Oniji II, and in 1762 he became Otani Hiroji III. In 1780 he took a travelling production in Echigo with Matsumoto Koshiro and Ichikawa Yaozo, and returned to Edo the following year. He last performed at Morita Theater in 1798. He was good at jidaimono and exteremely popular with female spectators, but in his late career he lost popularity. He was active from 1755 to 1798. |
